Family Class Sponsorship

Family Class Sponsorship

The Family Class Immigration Program is designed to bring together Canadian citizens and permanent residents with their close family members. By committing to support sponsored family members, sponsors assure that they will cover their basic needs for a specified duration, alleviating reliance on social assistance.

Sponsorship applications involving spouses, common-law or conjugal partners and dependent children are given priority.

Types of Family Class Sponsorship Programs:

- Family Class Immigration Sponsorship

- Parents and Grandparents Program

- Parents and Grandparents Super Visa

Eligibility:

Sponsor must be:

- at least 18 years old

- either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident living in Canada.

- the sponsored family members can include a spouse or common-law partner, dependent children, parents, and grandparents.

Financial Responsibility: Sponsors are required to demonstrate that they have the financial means to support the family members they are sponsoring, ensuring they do not rely on social assistance.

Undertaking: Sponsors must sign a sponsorship undertaking, committing to providing financial support for their sponsored family members for a specified period.

Processing Times: Processing times for Family Class Sponsorship applications may vary, and it is advisable to be patient.

Application Process: The application process involves both the sponsor and the sponsored person submitting applications. It is crucial to follow the specific requirements outlined by IRCC.

Medical and Criminal Checks: Both sponsors and sponsored individuals may be required to undergo medical examinations and provide police certificates to ensure admissibility to Canada.

Refusal and Appeals: If the sponsorship application is refused, there may be an opportunity to appeal the decision. Seeking legal advice in such cases is recommended.

Who Can You Sponsor?

The sponsorship program extends to spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, parents, and grandparents. Exceptions exist, allowing sponsorship of non-immediate family members under specific conditions, such as legal adoption and meeting the definition of a dependent child.

Income Requirements for Sponsorship

Sponsors must sign a Sponsorship Agreement, committing to providing financial support for the basic needs of the sponsored person. Certain sponsorships may necessitate meeting or exceeding the Low Income Cut-off (LICO), especially when sponsoring individuals with dependents.
